ASUS Leading the Way with Notebooks Incorporating
Dedicated Graphics Engines
Significantly Impacts Windows® Vista® Usability, Multimedia and 3D Gaming Performance

Fremont, CA:  July 7, 2006 – As applications for notebooks become more demanding, ASUS Computer International has introduced an extremely strong and extensive lineup of notebooks incorporating dedicated graphics engines.  Long known for the quality and style of its offerings, ASUS is the number four notebook manufacturer worldwide, and is the number nine brand.  This article examines what dedicated graphics engines are, and how they benefit customers.

Dedicated Graphics Engines Explained
A (“DGE” or “discrete graphics”) is a dedicated graphics processing chip designed to improve graphics function of your notebook.  It does so by taking the chores of reading from memory and performing screen updates away from your laptop’s CPU, leaving the processor free to purely handle calculations.  Today’s dedicated graphics engines also process lighting, shading and 3D graphics, decode video, and perform motion compensation.  A DGE has its own integrated memory and does not need the CPU to access information in the main memory.  Because it is hardware, a DGE will of course add to the cost of your machine.  Most people find the investment well worth it.

How Will a DGE Affect a Laptop’s Performance?
In laptops without a DGE, the CPU performs all of the above functions itself - a huge burden. Today’s higher resolution screens require a tremendous amount of work, and CPUs without dedicated graphics engines can easily become overloaded.  When they are overloaded, the performance of applications as simple as word processing can noticeably suffer from pauses and delays.   More demanding applications like 3D games are even more seriously affected.  Finally, models without a dedicated graphics engine will suffer when running Windows® Vista®.  Vista® also comes with Media Center, and management of multimedia on top of Vista® will put tremendous demands on systems.

When a DGE is added to the system, the benefits are obvious.  Frame rates increase tremendously, changing slow, jerky 3D in games into a smooth and natural presentation that allows you to truly enjoy the experience.  Video playback quality improves significantly, and users will benefit from the full range of features that Vista® offers.
